Bamboo Temple Chinese Benevolent Association

RDH has served as a Standing Chairman of the BTCBA, since 1993

After first arriving in New York City’s Chinatown and taking post at the local Hakka Association for sometime, Lam Sang was later persuaded to move to the Hip Sing Merchant Association (home page image).

From the general membership, he accepted some seven disciples, (one was formally excommunicated by Lam Sang turning the shrine’s incense upside down and sending him away) in the late 1950’s. They all lived together in one NYC Chinatown apartment in a Teacher – student relationship.  Chief among the disciples was Wong Baklim.

As the first disciple, Wong created the BTCBA in New York Chinatown, circa 1963, to promote Lam Sang’s Kwongsai Mantis teaching. (Wong seated center, Jesse Eng Sibok right, late Harry Sun Sibok left.  All were first generation disciples of Lam.)  www.bambootemple.com

China Kwongsai Mantis Hometown

We can say that Pingshan is the hometown as we know it today

Kwongsai Mantis as we know it today can be said to have begun with Chung Yel Chong (Zhang Yaozong).  He was born in Dan Sui Town, 1899, just outside of today’s Pingshan Town.  He accepted two Pingshan students:  Lam Sang (born in 1910) and Wong Yuk Kong (born in 1916).

Lam Sang took the Kwongsai Mantis teaching to the USA and Wong blossomed Hakka Mantis in China.  Today, Wong Yuk Kong’s family carries on the tradition in Pingshan Town, as shown below.   His son, Wong Yao Hua, is chiefly responsible for the preservation and promotion and has been awarded the Chinese government’s award for ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage.’   Elder son, Wong Yao Hong, is also a strong proponent.
